Hello,

Is anyone here interested in oceanography? I'd like to do some independent research on undersea geomatics and digital mapping. In addition to a review of basic physics and a reading up on physical oceanography, what would be a good regimen of reading material to get me up to speed? I'm a pretty good computer programmer and have experience with digital audio signal processing. But would also like to learn more about acoustics.

btw, here is the physical oceanography text I'm using (available free, and very good):

Hello there! It's great to see your interest in oceanography and your plans for independent research on undersea geomatics and digital mapping. Here are some reading materials that I would recommend to supplement your current resources:

1. "Introductory Oceanography" by Thurman and Trujillo - This book provides a comprehensive overview of physical oceanography and covers topics such as waves, tides, currents, and marine life. It also includes a section on the use of technology in oceanography.

2. "Fundamentals of Ocean Acoustics" by Lurton - This book delves into the principles of underwater acoustics and how sound is used in oceanography for mapping and data collection.

3. "The Underwater Acoustics Handbook" by Cox and D'Antonio - This is a more advanced text on underwater acoustics that covers topics such as sonar, signal processing, and ocean noise.

4. "Digital Ocean Acoustics" by Kuperman et al. - This book focuses on the use of digital signal processing in ocean acoustics, making it a great resource for someone with a background in computer programming.

Additionally, I would also suggest looking into online resources such as webinars, open-access journals, and research papers on oceanography and acoustics. These can provide valuable insights and the latest developments in the field.

Best of luck with your research!

What is physical oceanography?

Physical oceanography is a subfield of oceanography that studies the physical processes and properties of the ocean, including currents, waves, tides, and temperature. It also examines how these physical factors impact marine life and the Earth's climate.

What is geomatics?

Geomatics is the science and technology of acquiring, storing, analyzing, and managing spatial data. It involves the use of various tools and techniques such as remote sensing, GIS, and GPS to gather and interpret information about the Earth's surface and its features.

How are physical oceanography and geomatics related?

Physical oceanography and geomatics are closely related as they both involve the study of the Earth's surface and its features. Geomatics provides the tools and techniques to collect and analyze data related to physical oceanography, while physical oceanography provides the context and understanding of how these physical processes impact the Earth's surface and features.

What are some applications of physical oceanography and geomatics?

Physical oceanography and geomatics have various applications, including marine navigation, coastal management, climate modeling, and resource management. They are also used in disaster management, ocean exploration, and environmental monitoring.

What are some career options in physical oceanography and geomatics?

There are many career options in physical oceanography and geomatics, such as oceanographer, marine scientist, GIS analyst, cartographer, remote sensing specialist, and environmental consultant. These fields also offer opportunities for research and teaching in academic institutions.
