Direction of Force (Motor Effect)

Taking into account Fleming's Left Hand Rule, the direction of the force acting on the wire would be outwards, perpendicular to the direction of the current. In summary, when using Fleming's Left Hand Rule to determine the direction of the force on a current-carrying wire in a magnetic field, the index finger represents the direction of the magnetic field, the middle finger represents the direction of the current, and the thumb represents the direction of the resulting force.

Homework Statement

[PLAIN]http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/5023/directionofforce.jpg
Basically I have to work out the force acting on a current-carrying wire in a magnetic field.

Homework Equations

Fleming's Left Hand Rule
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleming's_left_hand_rule_for_motors)

The Attempt at a Solution

Ok so for the first question (the one on the left)
index finger - pointing up
middle finger - pointing right

my thumb was pointing "out"
so the direction of the force acting on the wire was just "out"

For the second question
index finger - up
middle finger - ?

I'm totally stumped on what direction the current is flowing in :(

The current in the second picture appears to be flowing diagonally down and to the right.

What is direction of force?

Direction of force, also known as the motor effect, refers to the direction in which a force acts on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field.

How is direction of force determined?

The direction of force is determined by using the right-hand rule. Point your thumb in the direction of the current, your fingers in the direction of the magnetic field, and the direction in which your palm faces will be the direction of the force.

What factors affect the direction of force?

The direction of force is affected by the magnitude of the current, the strength of the magnetic field, and the angle between the current and the magnetic field.

What is the relationship between direction of force and motion?

The direction of force is perpendicular to both the current and the magnetic field. This means that the force will cause the conductor to move in a circular motion around the magnetic field lines.

How is direction of force used in everyday life?

Direction of force is used in many everyday devices, such as electric motors, generators, and speakers. It is also used in transportation systems, such as trains and maglev trains, which use the motor effect to move along magnetic tracks.
