In summary, non-equilibrium thermodynamics is a branch of thermodynamics that focuses on the study of systems that are constantly changing and exchanging energy with their surroundings. Coupled chemical reactions, which refer to interconnected chemical reactions, play a crucial role in non-equilibrium thermodynamics by influencing the behavior of the system. The main difference between equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics is that the former deals with steady-state systems while the latter deals with constantly changing systems. Non-equilibrium thermodynamics is important in understanding real-world systems, such as weather patterns and biological reactions. It has many practical applications in fields such as biology, chemistry, and engineering, as well as in understanding climate change and environmental processes.

Need a good book...

On non-equilibrium thermodynamics, particulary of chemical reactions. More specifically still, coupled chemical reactions in open systems. Had a look around our library and most we have seem to be pre-occupied mainly with engineering (engines, electric currents etc). Any suggestions greatly appreciated (also websites, review articles... ?).

Cheers,

"Non-eq. thermo?" Prigogine. From your protein folding questions, that is NOT what you want. Thermodynamics, Lewis & Randall, 2nd ed., Pitzer & Brewer, 1961, might be more to your liking for discussions of irreversible processes, estimations of properties, and the other basics of chem. thermo.

1. What is non-equilibrium thermodynamics?

Non-equilibrium thermodynamics is a branch of thermodynamics that studies systems that are not in thermodynamic equilibrium, meaning that they are constantly changing and exchanging energy with their surroundings. This field focuses on the study of irreversible processes and how they affect the behavior of a system.

2. How do coupled chemical reactions affect non-equilibrium thermodynamics?

Coupled chemical reactions refer to a series of chemical reactions that are interconnected and affect each other's rates. In non-equilibrium thermodynamics, these reactions can lead to the formation of new thermodynamic states and influence the overall behavior of the system. They are often used to model complex systems in biological, environmental, and industrial processes.

3. What is the difference between equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics?

The main difference between equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics is that equilibrium thermodynamics deals with systems that are in a steady state and not undergoing any changes, while non-equilibrium thermodynamics focuses on the behavior of systems that are constantly changing and exchanging energy with their surroundings. Equilibrium thermodynamics is often used to describe ideal systems, while non-equilibrium thermodynamics is more applicable to real-world systems.

4. Why is non-equilibrium thermodynamics important in understanding real-world systems?

Non-equilibrium thermodynamics is important because it helps us understand the behavior of real-world systems, which are often in a state of non-equilibrium. Many natural processes, such as weather patterns and biological reactions, involve constantly changing systems. By studying non-equilibrium thermodynamics, we can better understand and predict the behavior of these systems.

5. What are some applications of non-equilibrium thermodynamics?

Non-equilibrium thermodynamics has many practical applications, including in the fields of biology, chemistry, and engineering. It is used to study biological systems, such as metabolism and cellular processes, as well as industrial processes, such as chemical reactions and energy transfer. Non-equilibrium thermodynamics is also important in understanding climate change and environmental processes, such as ocean currents and atmospheric circulation.
