In summary, the conversation discusses former President George W. Bush's actions during his time in office, including his handling of Hurricane Katrina and his attempt to let the UAE control major ports in the U.S. The conversation also mentions a comedian named Stephen Colbert and a joke about Bush's legacy. There is also a disagreement about giving credit to Colbert for the joke.

How would you rate Bush?

My option would be "Worst" or at least "one of the worst" - right down there with Harding and Hoover.

strengthening our friendship w/ the UAE by attempting to let them control our major ports,
The ports deal wasn't about selling control to the UAE - it was selling power to a private business based in UAE, you've misstated that. Certain lawmakers of both parties made a poltical stunt out of it, pandering to racist and xenophobic fear with their "national security" mongering - while spooking a foreign business away from an American investment. :grumpy:

While we're at it, "Harriet Meyers" is a prostitute in Vegas - you were probably thinking of "Harriet Meirs".

It would also help, when stealing "great or greatest?" jokes from comedian Stephen Colbert, to have the decency to give him due credit. Otherwise, people might get confused as to who's idea it was.

Admin edit: Astronuc is fully capable of speaking for himself, regardless of the (rather poor) joke your thread intends to communicate.

There is no point in leaving this open.

What is George W. Bush's legacy?

George W. Bush's legacy is often characterized by his handling of major events such as the Iraq War, Hurricane Katrina, and controversial appointments, such as Harriet Miers as Supreme Court Justice and the proposed UAE port deal.

What was the impact of the Iraq War?

The Iraq War, which began in 2003, resulted in the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's regime and the establishment of a new government. However, it also led to years of violence and instability in the region, and is estimated to have cost the United States over $2 trillion and resulted in the deaths of thousands of American soldiers and civilians.

How did Hurricane Katrina affect the United States?

Hurricane Katrina, which struck in 2005, was one of the most devastating natural disasters in American history. It caused over 1,800 deaths and an estimated $125 billion in damages. The response to the disaster was heavily criticized, with many pointing to government failures and inadequate aid for the victims.

What was the controversy surrounding the proposed UAE port deal?

In 2006, the Bush administration approved a deal that would have given a government-owned company from the United Arab Emirates control over major U.S. ports. This sparked widespread controversy and criticism, with concerns about national security and potential terrorist threats. The deal was eventually cancelled due to the backlash.

Why was Harriet Miers' nomination to the Supreme Court controversial?

In 2005, President Bush nominated Harriet Miers, a personal friend and White House counsel, to the Supreme Court. This sparked controversy and opposition from both Democrats and Republicans, who felt that Miers lacked the necessary qualifications and experience for the position. Miers eventually withdrew her nomination.
