In summary, emperors used to exile people from their country instead of killing them, likely due to political danger and undermining the authority of the emperor. Today, the closest thing to exile may be attempts to remove people from the public stage, such as barring them from political debates.

Like 200 years ago, emperors can exile people from their country instead of killing them. Does it exist today? Or do we just put them in jail?

i think the reason you exile someone is that they are politically dangerous. specifically, they undermine the authority of the emperor. now, this is something we do at least every 4 years, though practically on a more continuous basis. or at least we pretend to.

the closest thing to exile now may be attempts to remove people from the public stage. like how Keyes was not allowed into the Republican primary debates so many years ago.
