STP is 273 K(0 C) and 1 atm while Standard State is 298 K(25 C).

Besides the numerical difference, when is which used? In problems sets that I receive, whether or not STP or Standard state is used is often stated but sometimes not.

More importantly, why is there such a difference? Is it only convention or is there reasoning for the differences?
