Buoyancy (Weight of a barbell underwater)

In summary, buoyancy refers to the ability of an object to float in a fluid. It is determined by the weight of the object and the amount of water it displaces. When a barbell is underwater, it feels lighter due to the upward force of buoyancy. This is because the water exerts an upward force on the barbell, reducing its overall weight. Buoyancy can be calculated by subtracting the weight of the displaced water from the weight of the object. This is important in sports and fitness, as it can help athletes maintain a certain position or lift heavier weights with less effort.

A bodybuilder is holding a 20-kg steel barbell above her head. How much force would she have to exert if the barbell were lifted underwater?Fb= Density x Volume x Gravity
Density= mass/volume
7860= 20/ V

V= .00254 m^3
Fb= 1000 x .00245 x 9.81
Fb= 24.9174 N

You've found the buoyant force, which is the force exerted by the water. But what's the force that she has to exert?

I've never done this type of problem wouldn't it just be mass*bouancy force 24.917 * 20 kg =498.35N

1. What is buoyancy?

Buoyancy refers to the ability of an object to float in a fluid, such as water. It is determined by the weight of the object and the amount of water it displaces.

2. How does the weight of a barbell underwater differ from its weight on land?

The weight of a barbell underwater is less than its weight on land due to the upward force of buoyancy. This is because the water exerts an upward force on the barbell, reducing its overall weight.

3. Why does a barbell feel lighter when immersed in water?

As mentioned before, the buoyant force of the water counteracts the weight of the barbell, making it feel lighter. This is also known as the Archimedes' principle.

4. How is buoyancy calculated?

Buoyancy is calculated by subtracting the weight of the displaced water from the weight of the object. This can be expressed as: buoyant force = weight of the displaced fluid - weight of the object.

5. Why is buoyancy important in sports and fitness?

Buoyancy plays a significant role in sports and fitness, particularly in activities like swimming or weightlifting. The buoyant force can help athletes maintain a certain position or lift heavier weights with less effort, making it a crucial aspect of their performance.
