Sodium hydroxide neutralized by phosphoric acid

In summary, the conversation discusses the process of neutralization between sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid. The book provides minimal guidance on the process and the individual is seeking assistance in finding the elements involved. The conversation also mentions rules for acid-base reactions and the expected salt formed from the neutralization process.

The book that I have goes into very little detail about how to do these sort of problems. I know that you have to balance the equation at the end, which I can do. I do not know how to find the elements! (Besides the fact that Sodium Hydroxide is NaOH.) Can anyone help? THNX!

a. What salt is formed when a solution of sodium hydroxide is neutralized by phosphoric acid, H3PO4?

b. What is the equation of this process?

Rules for Acid-Bases:

ACID + BASE --> NEUTRAL (or METAL SALT) + WATER
ACID + CARBONATE --> METAL SALT + CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER
ACID + REACTIVE METAL --> METAL SALT + HYDROGEN

Hope this helps

Depends.Phosphate, phosphite & pirophosphate can be obtained.Phosphate would be an expected guess.

1. What is the chemical reaction between sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid?

The chemical reaction between sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid is a neutralization reaction. This means that the two substances react with each other to form a salt and water.

2. What is the balanced chemical equation for the reaction between sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid?

The balanced chemical equation for the reaction between sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid is NaOH + H3PO4 → Na3PO4 + H2O.

3. What is the purpose of neutralizing sodium hydroxide with phosphoric acid?

The purpose of neutralizing sodium hydroxide with phosphoric acid is to create a neutral solution or to adjust the pH of a solution. This is because both sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid are strong bases and acids, respectively, and can cause solutions to become too basic or acidic.

4. How is the neutralization reaction between sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid used in industries?

The neutralization reaction between sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid is used in various industries, such as in the production of fertilizers, soaps, and detergents. It is also used in the manufacture of food products, such as soft drinks and baking powder.

5. What are the safety precautions when working with sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid?

When working with sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid, it is important to wear protective gear, such as gloves and goggles, as they can cause chemical burns if they come into contact with the skin or eyes. It is also important to work in a well-ventilated area and to handle the substances with caution to avoid any accidents.
