Calculating the Mass & Comp. of Methanol Mixtures

In summary, the formula for calculating the mass of methanol mixtures is mass = volume x density. The composition of methanol mixtures can be determined by dividing the mass of each component by the total mass of the mixture and expressing it as a percentage. The mass of methanol mixtures is usually measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg), while the volume is measured in milliliters (mL) or liters (L). It is important to accurately calculate the mass and composition of methanol mixtures for safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in industrial processes and experiments. Factors such as temperature, pressure, and impurities in the mixture can affect the accuracy of calculations, so it is important to account for these factors

Homework Statement

Two methanol-water mixtures are contained in separate flasks. The first mixture contains 40wt% methanol and the second contains 70wt% methanol. If 200g of the first mixture is combined with 150g of the second, what are the mass and composition of the product?

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

the first solution .4*200=80
the second .7*150=105
80+105=350x
x=52.9%wt methanol
amount is 150+200=350g
