Total number of states will not be changed?

For bulk solid and superlattices:

Does the introduction of the periodic potential in superlattices change the total number of states or preserve the same (or almost same) total number of states?

I dont get you question. Bulk will be made of one material, whereas, supperlattice will have at least two materials. How can you relate states of one with the other?
