Why Are My Posts Deleted in Homework Help?

Ive noticed on probably... 2 occasions maybe that my posts in the homework help section have been deleted. I am just curious as to why that is...

Most recently, someone posted a question in the homework help section without any work, he just posted the questions. So i asked him to show some work and then he can receive help. I checked back a day later and my post was deleted.

Ive also noticed it happening after me giving help to someone. My post was deleted and then another post by a mentor was posted with practically the same information as the info from my post... just curious as to why that's the case.

I received an email today telling me the OP had responded to my post in this post... i went back to check and my post wasnt there, and lowly had taken over. Not that there is anything wrong with that, i was just curious.

Are you sure your posted there? There is no record of a deleted message of yours, and no record in the edit log of anyone having removed a post by you.

Yeah, Mentors can generally see deleted posts in-line in a thread, and there are no deleted posts by anybody in that thread. Very weird.

Is it just in one forum where you have seen this, or in multiple forums? How often has it happened?

To Cristo and Berk: I am 99.9% sure i posted in that thread. I even received the email that notified me that someone else (The op) posted in the same area right after my original post.

The only other time it happened to me was the instance i described in my original post, when i had posted help and my post was deleted and someone else posted my same exact thing pretty much.

Thats odd it didnt show up in the records though!

why do you have 3.2sin(42) as an x direction vector? and why 3.2 Cos 42 = 2.38 in the Y direction? I didnt 100% go through your question but if this is just a question of measuring the x and y components of someones trip on a 2-D plane, i don't see why you don't have all sin in Y and cos in X computations.

As far as signs go, the angle from the positive horizontal x position should take care of that.

Did you delete that one on purpose, or is it one of the ones that you noticed was deleted? (I realize that you may not remember, of course).

Does anybody else like a roommate have access to your PF account, or maybe has spoofed your account and password? Try changing your password and see if the problem goes away...?

The only way us Mentors wouldn't see your deleted post in that thread if it's there, is if it were "Hard" deleted. That's an option we have (and we use for porn spam, for example), but we rarely use it. We "Soft" delete stuff generally, in case we decide in a Mentor discussion that the deletion really wasn't necessary, and want to restore the post.

If we end up not being able to figure this out in a day or two, we can ask Greeg & chroot (the PF Admins) -- I think they can probalby see hard deleted posts.

There's an outside chance that a Mentor accidentally hard deleted that post if it was there. No idea why, but we make mistakes occasionally when clicking through our Mentoring chores. Not that I've ever made a clicking mistake or anything, I'm just saying... :uhh:

Hmm... i don't remember deleting that post (nor do i really remember posting it!). I do leave my door open and often leave windows up so my roommates do have access to my room so them deleting things is a possibility. I don't think that's happening though.

Maybe it was just some sort of glitch in the system or something that caused my recent post to get deleted?

It'd still show up in the edit log though, but the edit log for that thread is empty. Check out the log on this thread, where I've hard deleted a test post I just made (thread tools> edit thread.. perform action).

Wait a minute... I missed that in my initial reply! Are you 99.9% sure that it was a reply from the OP after your post? The OP never replied in that thread. Unless their post and your reply both disappeared down the same black hole in the Bermuda Triangle!

Uh-oh, now I need to give myself an infraction for the Bermuda Triangle thing...

But seriously, if you're sure the OP replied to you, the I'll ask Greg and chroot if they see anything like hard deleted posts. It could have just been a server hiccup as well.

im sure your clicking skills are perfect! haha. I am sure it was just a mistake and its really nothing I am too concerned about. I was just curious as to if it was something i personally was doing wrong that caused my post to get deleted. I really appreciate you guys taking the time to help me with this though and understand mistakes (like misclicking :tongue: do happen! I wouldn't worry about bothering Gregg or Chroot with this.

Yeah, you know what. Now that i go back and re-read his original post, it seems as if he edited in his work to his original post... The confirmation was that the OP had replied to my post and in the description of what he posted, he showed me the work which he did on the problem (which was not included in his original post). After i went back and looked, his original post now contains work, which it did not before, and my post was deleted... So possibly my post wasnt needed anymore because he edited in work and someone hard deleted it by mistake?

Hah! Figured it out!

There WAS a duplicate thread. The one you pointed us to is a repost with more info in the OP. The original thread with your reply intact and no initial work shown is here:

So the only hiccup was you getting back to the correct thread. You ended up clicking into the newer thread where the OP reposted with his work.

I'll finish this off by merging the two threads. Bermuda Triangle be GONE!
