List the solids in order of increasing polarity.

In summary, polarity is the separation of electric charge within a molecule and is measured using the dipole moment scale. The order of increasing polarity for solids is based on the polarity of the individual molecules, and solids can have different polarities depending on their molecular makeup. Polarity can affect the properties of a solid, such as melting and boiling points, intermolecular forces, solubility, and reactivity.

Homework Statement

List the solids in order of increasing polarity.
NaCl,C10H8, C6H5COOH, NH2CONH2.

Homework Equations

N/A

The Attempt at a Solution

C10H8, C6H5COOH, NH2CONH2, NaCl. My rationale is that the longer the carbon skeleton the least polar.

It really depends on the molecular geometry. You should figure out the structure of the molecule and then calculate the dipole moment by referencing an electronegativity chart for specific numbers. That should get you a good idea of the polarity.

1. What is polarity?

Polarity is the separation of electric charge within a molecule, resulting in a molecule having a positive and negative end. This is caused by differences in electronegativity between atoms in a molecule.

2. How is polarity measured?

Polarity is measured using a scale called the dipole moment, which is the product of the distance between the charges and the magnitude of the charges. The higher the dipole moment, the more polar the molecule is.

3. What is the order of increasing polarity for solids?

The order of increasing polarity for solids is based on the polarity of the molecules that make up the solid. Generally, the more polar the individual molecules are, the more polar the solid will be. Therefore, the order of increasing polarity for solids is usually the same as the order of increasing polarity for the individual molecules.

4. Can solids have different polarities?

Yes, solids can have different polarities depending on the types of molecules that make up the solid. Some solids may have mostly nonpolar molecules, making them overall nonpolar, while others may have mostly polar molecules, making them overall polar.

5. How does polarity affect the properties of a solid?

Polarity can affect the properties of a solid in various ways. For example, polar solids tend to have higher melting and boiling points, as well as stronger intermolecular forces, compared to nonpolar solids. Polarity can also affect the solubility and reactivity of a solid with other substances.
