Single or Dual graphic cards ?

In summary, the conversation discusses the debate between using a single graphic card or a dual graphic card setup. It is mentioned that the answer depends on the size and resolution of the monitor, with a dual card setup performing better at high resolutions. The suggestion is made to do a Google search for benchmarks comparing the two options. The conversation also considers the value for money and the impact of adding a second graphic card on available RAM. It is concluded that a single card would be sufficient for a 21.5 inch monitor with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Hi,

Does anybody know if it's better to have a single graphic card or a dual graphic cards?

As an example :

Single 1.8 GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 or Dual 1.8 GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 260

Any input would be appreciated! Thanks

The answer is dependent on what size monitor you're using and the resolutions you're wanting to run. At really high resolutions on a large monitor, a dual card setup would yield better performance (if the game supports it). It really makes a difference when you start ramping up anti-aliasing and anistropic filtering.

Do a google search for gtx 295 vs 260 sli and see what the benchmarks say. Take note of the fps vs resolution.

The value for money matters here, see the benchmark for graphs card which cost twice to that of GTX 260 and then compare the performance of GTX 260 in SLI.

Give ATI a shot also...they crossfire instead and better value for money here.

Just an aside, if you are running 32 bit windows adding a another graphic card will reduce the amount of ram available to windows. 32 bit windows has a hard cap of 4 gigs of ram it can use. GPU memory counts toward this cap.

My screen is a 21.5 inches alienware aw2210 optx HD so I guess it'll be alright with a single card!

...and my system is windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.

What is the difference between a single and dual graphic card setup?

A single graphic card setup means that there is only one graphics card installed in the computer, while a dual graphic card setup means that there are two graphics cards installed and working together.

What are the advantages of using a dual graphic card setup?

The main advantage of using a dual graphic card setup is improved graphics performance. The two cards work together to handle the processing load, resulting in better graphics quality and smoother gameplay.

Can I use different graphic cards in a dual setup?

Yes, it is possible to use different graphic cards in a dual setup. However, for optimal performance, it is recommended to use identical cards from the same manufacturer.

Do all computers support dual graphic card setups?

No, not all computers support dual graphic card setups. In order to use a dual setup, the computer must have a motherboard with two or more PCI-Express slots and a power supply with enough wattage to support two graphics cards.

Is a dual graphic card setup necessary for gaming?

No, a dual graphic card setup is not necessary for gaming. Many modern single graphics cards are powerful enough to handle most games without the need for a second card. However, a dual setup may provide better performance for high-end, graphics-intensive games.
