Good Graduate Schools in Physics (Astrophysics, HighEnergy) in Rural Areas

In summary, the person is looking for suggestions on PhD programs in US, Canada, Europe, and possibly Australia, preferably in a rural area with a strong focus in physics. Their research interests include cosmology, astrophysics, high energy physics, and mathematical physics. They mention being open to schools like Urbana, IL and Ames, IA that may be located in remote areas but still have a strong program.

Hi all,

Due to medical reason, I have problem with noises, and I am graduating from M.Sc soon, I am looking for PhD program in US, Canada, Europe (Australia?)

Can you please suggest which good school which is situated at rather rural area, yet strong in physics.

My research interest is : Cosmology, Astrophysics (both theoretical / computational, observational) , High Energy Physics (both theoretical and experimental) , Mathematical physics (more on Quantum Field Theory , maybe String which I still know very little about)

Thanks! =D

Any school that's big enough to have a strong PhD program is going to be a small-to-medium city in its own right. Urbana, IL and Ames, IA are located in the middle of nowhere but you would only know that if you drove a couple miles out of town.

1. What factors should I consider when looking for a good graduate school in physics in a rural area?

When looking for a good graduate school in physics in a rural area, some important factors to consider include the program's reputation and rankings, the faculty members and their research interests, the availability of funding and resources, and the overall location and environment of the school.

2. Are there any advantages to attending a graduate school in a rural area for physics?

Yes, there can be some advantages to attending a graduate school in a rural area for physics. These may include a smaller and more close-knit community, lower cost of living, and potential access to unique research opportunities or facilities.

3. What are some top graduate schools in physics (astrophysics, high energy) in rural areas?

Some top graduate schools in physics in rural areas include the University of Wyoming, Montana State University, and the University of New Mexico.

4. How can I find funding for graduate school in physics in a rural area?

There are various sources of funding for graduate school in physics in rural areas, including scholarships, grants, teaching or research assistantships, and fellowships. It is important to research and apply for these opportunities early and often.

5. Are there any challenges to attending a graduate school in physics in a rural area?

Some potential challenges of attending a graduate school in physics in a rural area may include limited networking opportunities, fewer employment options after graduation, and potential isolation from larger scientific communities. However, many students find that the benefits of a rural graduate program outweigh these challenges.
