Gears and Clutch: How to Have Both Rotating

In summary: This setup will allow for a front/4/rear wheel drive switch lever, where the drive motor is connected to the gearbox and the drive selected determines which wheels the output of the gearbox goes to.In summary, to achieve a front/4/rear wheel drive switch lever, you will need to add a new axle with idler gears, another pair of clutch teeth, and additional gears to the existing setup. This will allow for one side of the clutch to be engaged, stopping the opposite gear from spinning, and for two additional gears to spin when one is stopped, ultimately determining which wheels the output of the gearbox goes to.

Hi,

If I have a clutch that meshes on an axle and two idler gears with clutch teeth how do I:

Have both gears rotating but when one of the idlers is engaged stop the opposite gear spinning, so just this one spins.

The clutch is double sided of course so there is a gear either side.
id like to put this on a new axle below this one so more gears will be needed and will mesh with the idler gears.

This is for a front/4/rear wheel drive switch lever. The drive motor is connected to the gearbox but the drive selected tells which wheels the output of the gearbox goes to.

To achieve this you would need a couple of modifications to the existing setup. Firstly, you will need to add a new axle below the existing one, with the two idler gears mounted on it. Secondly, you will need to add another pair of clutch teeth to the existing clutch. This will allow you to engage one side of the clutch when you want to stop the opposite gear from spinning. Finally, you will need to add two additional gears that will mesh with the idler gears, so that one side will spin when the other is stopped.

What are gears and how do they work?

Gears are mechanical devices that transmit power and motion between two rotating shafts. They consist of toothed wheels that mesh together and rotate at the same time, converting rotational motion into linear motion. They work by transferring the force and speed of one shaft to the other through the meshing of their teeth.

What is the purpose of a clutch in a gear system?

A clutch is used to disengage or engage the connection between two rotating shafts. In a gear system, it allows for smooth shifting between gears and control over the speed and power transmitted from the engine to the wheels. It also helps to prevent damage to the gears by absorbing shock and vibrations.

How do you maintain and care for gears and clutch?

Proper maintenance of gears and clutch includes regular lubrication to reduce friction and wear, as well as periodic inspection for any signs of damage or wear. It is also important to use the correct type and amount of lubricant, and to replace any worn or damaged parts promptly to avoid further damage to the system.

What factors should be considered when selecting gears and clutch?

When selecting gears and clutch, the type of application, desired speed and torque, and the amount of load and stress on the system should be taken into consideration. The size, material, and design of the gears and clutch should also be chosen based on the specific requirements of the system.

How do you ensure proper alignment and meshing of gears in a gear system?

To ensure proper alignment and meshing of gears, it is important to use precision tools and techniques during installation. The gears should be mounted on shafts that are parallel and have the correct distance between them. The gears should also be checked for proper alignment and meshing regularly to prevent damage and ensure optimal performance.
