vaccum physics JJ Thomson's experiment

Why did JJ Thomson need to inprove the vacuum in his cathode ray tube?
how to approximately calculate the pressure if one want to do thomson's electric field deflection experiment?
thank you all!!

I'd guess that the vacuum wasn't good enough and the electrons kept colliding with air molecules.
