Text book for SU5/GUT theories

In summary, SU5/GUT theory is a proposed theory in particle physics that aims to unify the strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions into a single force. It differs from the Standard Model by attempting to address limitations and incorporate supersymmetry. While there is no direct evidence supporting it, it has gained support from theoretical calculations and indirect observations. If proven correct, it could have significant implications for our understanding of the universe and potentially lead to new advancements. However, it also faces challenges and criticisms, such as the lack of experimental evidence and its complexity.

Dear PF,

Could you please advise me good detailed reference on Grand Unified Theories... especially I want to see where for example SU5 potential is composed from two Higgs representations (two Higgs fields) and how symmetry breaking (minima of potential appears for both of fields) happens...

Thank you...

Wonderful PDF. Thanks a lot.

1. What is SU5/GUT theory?

SU5/GUT theory, also known as the Standard Unified Theory or Grand Unified Theory, is a proposed theory in particle physics that aims to unify the strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions into a single force. It is based on the SU(5) gauge group and the theory of supersymmetry.

2. How is the SU5/GUT theory different from the Standard Model?

The Standard Model is the current accepted theory of particle physics, but it does not include gravity and has several other limitations. SU5/GUT theory attempts to address these limitations by unifying the three fundamental forces and incorporating supersymmetry, which proposes the existence of a partner particle for each known particle.

3. What evidence supports the SU5/GUT theory?

There is currently no experimental evidence that directly supports the SU5/GUT theory. However, it is a promising candidate for a theory of everything and has gained support from theoretical calculations and indirect observations, such as the unification of the three forces at high energies.

4. What are the potential implications of the SU5/GUT theory?

If the SU5/GUT theory is proven to be correct, it would have significant implications for our understanding of the fundamental forces and particles in the universe. It could also provide insights into the nature of dark matter and potentially lead to new technological advancements.

5. Are there any challenges or criticisms of the SU5/GUT theory?

Like any scientific theory, the SU5/GUT theory is not without its challenges and criticisms. Some of the main criticisms include the lack of experimental evidence, the complexity of the theory, and the fact that it has not yet been fully integrated with the theory of gravity.
