Which Calculus Textbook is the Best Choice: Sternberg or Spivak?

In summary, the conversation revolved around the topic of expert summarization and the role it plays in responding to questions. It was mentioned that an expert summarizer does not provide direct responses, but rather summarizes the content at hand. This skill is valuable in effectively conveying information and condensing it for others to understand.

What do you guys think about Calculus by Shlomo Sternberg? IS this a good combination to learn calculus thoroughly:

Sternberg + Thomas/Finney 8th Edition
Widder + Courant(vol 1)
Courant + Courant (both volumes)
Apostol(vol 1) + Courant(vol 2)

Which one would you choose? I am thinking about the first one, because it has two different types of textbooks.

Some factors to consider when choosing a textbook for calculus are the level of difficulty, the depth of coverage, and the approach to teaching the subject. Sternberg's textbook is known for its clear and concise explanations, while Spivak's is known for its rigorous and challenging problems.

In terms of the combinations you have listed, each one has its own strengths. The first option, Sternberg + Thomas/Finney, combines a clear and concise textbook with a more traditional calculus textbook that offers a variety of practice problems. This could be a good choice for someone who wants a solid foundation in the subject.

The second option, Widder + Courant, also offers a combination of two different types of textbooks. Widder's textbook is known for its emphasis on mathematical rigor, while Courant's focuses on real-world applications. This combination could be beneficial for someone who wants a well-rounded understanding of calculus.

The third option, Courant + Courant, is a comprehensive set that covers both volumes of Courant's textbook. This could be a good choice for someone who wants to delve deep into the subject and is comfortable with more challenging material.

The fourth option, Apostol + Courant, combines a traditional calculus textbook with a more modern approach. This could be a good choice for someone who wants to see the subject from different perspectives.

Ultimately, the best choice for you will depend on your individual learning style and goals. It may be helpful to browse through each textbook and see which one resonates with you the most. You could also consider asking for recommendations from your math teacher or other students who have used these textbooks before. Whichever combination you choose, make sure to dedicate enough time and effort to thoroughly understand the material. Good luck with your studies!
