What is the driving force to increasing the internal resistance of a battery

In summary, the increase in internal resistance of a battery is caused by the degradation of its components as it ages. This can directly affect battery performance by reducing usable energy, increasing voltage drop, and decreasing capacity and power output. Factors such as high temperatures, overcharging, and frequent deep discharges can contribute to this increase. To reduce internal resistance, improvements in design and proper maintenance are recommended. High internal resistance can have consequences such as reduced capacity and power output, potential damage to other components, and even overheating and fire.

What is the "driving force" to increasing the internal resistance of a battery

Homework Statement

A brand new battery almost have no resistance, but overtime when the internal resistance is great enough, the battery "dies". So my question is, what is causing the internal resistance to increase? Why can't resistance be the same forever?

The Attempt at a Solution

Don't throw me the second law of thermodynamics...

The driving force behind the increase in internal resistance of a battery is the chemical reactions that occur within the battery during the charging and discharging process. As the battery is used, these chemical reactions can cause changes in the structure and composition of the battery's components, leading to an increase in resistance. Additionally, factors such as temperature, age, and usage patterns can also contribute to the increase in internal resistance over time. The resistance cannot remain the same forever because the chemical reactions and other external factors will continue to impact the battery, causing changes in its internal resistance. This is a natural process and is a result of the battery's finite lifespan.

What is the driving force to increasing the internal resistance of a battery?

The driving force behind increasing the internal resistance of a battery is the degradation of its components. As a battery ages, the internal resistance increases due to the buildup of chemical byproducts and the degradation of the electrodes and electrolyte.

How does the internal resistance affect battery performance?

The internal resistance of a battery directly affects its performance by reducing the amount of usable energy and increasing the voltage drop. This results in a decrease in the battery's capacity and voltage output, leading to shorter run times and reduced power output.

What factors contribute to the increase in internal resistance?

Several factors can contribute to the increase in internal resistance of a battery. These include high temperatures, overcharging, and frequent deep discharges. Additionally, the type and quality of the materials used in the battery's construction can also play a role.

How can the internal resistance of a battery be reduced?

There are a few ways to reduce the internal resistance of a battery. One method is to improve the design and materials used in the battery's construction. Another approach is to avoid exposing the battery to extreme temperatures and to charge and discharge it properly.

What are the consequences of high internal resistance in a battery?

High internal resistance in a battery can lead to several consequences, including decreased capacity and reduced power output. It can also cause the battery to heat up and potentially damage other components in the device it is powering. In extreme cases, it can even lead to the battery overheating and catching fire.
