Electric potential midway between 2 charges

In summary, electric potential midway between 2 charges is the amount of electric potential energy per unit charge at a point that is equidistant between two charges. It can be calculated using the formula V = kQ/r, and is affected by the magnitude of the charges, the distance between the charges, and the medium in which the charges are located. The electric potential is directly related to the electric field, and can be negative when the electric field points in the opposite direction of decreasing potential.

Charges of −12.0 nC and −21.0 nC are separated by 0.700 m. What is the potential midway between the two charges?

I used the equation V = kq / r for each charge
and then added both V's. But I got it wrong. (the correct answer should be -847 V)
So...

V1 = (8.9x10^9)(-12 x 10^-9) / 0.7 = -152.6
V2 = (8.9x10^9)(-21 x 10^-9) / 0.7 = -267

V1 + V2 = -152.6 + (-267) = -420

What am i doing wrong?

maybe just algebra, the distance you need to use is the 1/2 way point of 0.35 see if that helps.

It appears that you may have made an error in your calculation for V2. The correct value for V2 should be -267.4 V, not -267 V. When you add this to V1, you get a total potential of -419.9 V, which is very close to the correct answer of -847 V. This small difference could be due to rounding errors or inaccuracies in the values used for the charges and distance. To ensure accuracy, it is important to use the exact values given in the question and use a calculator with enough significant figures. Additionally, double checking your calculations and units can help catch any mistakes.

1. What is electric potential midway between 2 charges?

Electric potential midway between 2 charges is the amount of electric potential energy per unit charge at a point that is equidistant between two charges. It is also known as the electric potential at the midpoint.

2. How is the electric potential midway between 2 charges calculated?

The electric potential midway between 2 charges can be calculated using the formula V = kQ/r, where V is the electric potential, k is the Coulomb's constant, Q is the charge of one of the charges, and r is the distance between the two charges.

3. What factors affect the electric potential midway between 2 charges?

The electric potential midway between 2 charges is affected by the magnitude of the charges, the distance between the charges, and the medium in which the charges are located. The electric potential will be greater if the charges are larger and closer together, and it will be lower in a medium with a high dielectric constant.

4. How does the electric potential midway between 2 charges relate to the electric field?

The electric potential midway between 2 charges is directly related to the electric field. The electric field is a measure of the force per unit charge at a given point, while the electric potential is a measure of the potential energy per unit charge at that same point. The electric field points in the direction of decreasing electric potential.

5. Can the electric potential midway between 2 charges be negative?

Yes, the electric potential midway between 2 charges can be negative. This means that the potential energy per unit charge is less than zero, indicating that the electric field points in the opposite direction of decreasing potential. This is common when one of the charges is negative and the other is positive.
