I was curious if anyone here was a videogame programmer. If so, could you tell me what an average day is like? I was also curious what you would need degree wise to become a videogame programmer.
One of the main programmers has a doctorate in physics, did it in chaos or mathmatical physics i believe.
A typical day for a Videogame Programmer involves a lot of coding and debugging. They may have meetings with other team members to discuss project progress and brainstorm ideas. They also spend time researching and implementing new technologies and techniques to improve the game. Additionally, they may need to troubleshoot any issues that arise during development.
Most Videogame Programmers have a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. However, some may have a degree in a different field but have extensive programming experience and knowledge of game development.
The most essential programming languages for a Videogame Programmer include C++, C#, and Java. Other languages that may be helpful include Python, JavaScript, and UnrealScript. It's also important for a Videogame Programmer to have a good understanding of game engines and development tools.
In addition to strong programming skills, a Videogame Programmer should also have excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to work well in a team. They should have a passion for gaming and be familiar with different gaming platforms and technologies. Good communication skills are also important for collaborating with other team members.
While experience in game development is not always necessary, it is highly beneficial. Having a portfolio of previous game development projects can demonstrate a Videogame Programmer's skills and abilities. It also shows their passion for the industry and their ability to work on a game from start to finish.
