In summary, The conversation is about designing a ladder to connect between a barge and jetty. The ladder is 7.5m long and 41cm wide with a 50cm handrail. The person is asking for help in calculating the load the ladder can support, specifically using Uniform distribution load. They also mention the need for a proposed cross-section, choice of materials, and understanding of failure modes. They ask for guidance and resources for designing the ladder.

hello everyone,

now i in practical in some company and they want me to design ladder and calculate the load that the ladder can support. the ladder is use to connected between barge and jetty.
the ladder also has handrail as stiffness and it work in 45deg.

dimension for ladder
length about 7.5m @ 24f
width about 41cm @ 1.3f
handrail is 50cm height

can anyone help me to calculate the load for this ladder. I know that need to use Uniform distribution load to calculate but i don't really understand. please someone guide me if you have some website and pdf for my review i really appreciated that

It sounds like the company is expecting too much from you. You need to have a proposed cross-section and choice of materials. Then you can make a list of possible failure modes. Then, for each failure mode, you need a mathematical model on which to base an analysis. Alternatively, search for a design already accomplished by a commercial firm that sells these things...

1. What factors should be considered when calculating the load for a ladder?

When calculating the load for a ladder, it is important to consider the type of ladder, its material, and the expected usage. Other factors to consider include the weight of the user, the weight of any tools or equipment being carried, and the angle at which the ladder will be placed.

2. How do I determine the maximum load capacity for a ladder?

The maximum load capacity for a ladder is typically indicated by the manufacturer. It is important to never exceed this capacity, as it could result in serious injury or damage to the ladder. If the maximum load capacity is not clearly stated, it is recommended to consult with a professional or choose a ladder with a higher weight capacity.

3. Can I use a ladder for more than its intended load capacity?

No, a ladder should never be used for more than its intended load capacity. Doing so can lead to structural damage or collapse of the ladder, putting the user at risk for injury. It is important to always follow the manufacturer's guidelines and never exceed the recommended weight limit.

4. How does the angle of the ladder affect the load capacity?

The angle at which a ladder is placed can significantly impact its load capacity. As the angle becomes steeper, the load capacity decreases. It is important to always place the ladder at the recommended angle for safe usage, and never exceed the maximum weight limit for the given angle.

5. Are there any safety precautions I should take when using a ladder?

Yes, there are several safety precautions to keep in mind when using a ladder. Always make sure the ladder is on a stable and level surface, and never use a damaged or defective ladder. Additionally, it is important to maintain three points of contact (two feet and one hand) while climbing, and to never lean too far to one side. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and use caution when carrying tools or equipment on a ladder.
