In summary, Washington Post Assistant Managing Editor Bob Woodward testified under oath that a senior administration official informed him about CIA operative Valerie Plame and her position at the agency before her identity was disclosed. Ex-intelligence officials are calling for President Bush to suspend the security clearance of his top political adviser Karl Rove, who was involved in outing Plame. There is speculation of a schism within the CIA and concerns about current intel officials not being able to comment on the matter. 16 former agents are all of a like mind and have a lot of information not available to the general public. There is also discussion about Libby's involvement in the case and his detailed notes on the matter. Recently appointed CIA head Porter Goss is seen as being

Washington Post Assistant Managing Editor Bob Woodward testified under oath Monday in the CIA leak case that a senior administration official told him about CIA operative Valerie Plame and her position at the agency nearly a month before her identity was disclosed.

In a more than two-hour deposition, Woodward told Special Counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald that the official casually told him in mid-June 2003 that Plame worked as a CIA analyst on weapons of mass destruction, and that he did not believe the information to be classified or sensitive, according to a statement Woodward released yesterday.[continued]

Interesting, though this involves an official other than Rove, and I doubt it was Libby because of the claim that "he did not believe the information to be classified or sensitive."

Meanwhile, according to news to date (MSNBC this evening), there is a lot of disbelief that someone as bright and detailed as Libby could have forgotten where/when he first learned of Plame (which was Cheney) after only a month or so had passed. In addition, his notes were unusually detailed on this particular matter.

Ex-intelligence officials rap Rove
Write Bush, urge him to suspend security clearance
By Warren P. Strobel, Knight Ridder Newspapers | November 16, 2005

WASHINGTON -- Sixteen former CIA and military intelligence officials yesterday urged President Bush to suspend the security clearance of his top political adviser, Karl Rove, following revelations that he played a role in outing CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson.

This is not likely to happen, but when 16 former agents are all of a like mind, they probably have a good reason. They aslo have a lot of information that anyone outside of the intellegence community does not have.

It is unfortunate that current intel officials are not allowed to comment on this. I have a gut feeling that there is a schism within the CIA.

Especially since, according to his own notes he discussed her 7 times in June/July before talking to Tim Russert. He also said he was surprised when Russert told him she worked for the CIA.

He should have taken a clue from Ollie North and shredded his notes.

Porter Goss is Bush's man. I wonder how things are going now that he is head of the CIA.

1. Who is Woodward and why is he relevant in this situation?

Bob Woodward is a journalist for The Washington Post and is best known for his reporting on the Watergate scandal in the 1970s. He is relevant in this situation because he was one of the first reporters to learn about CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity being leaked to the media.

2. When was Woodward first informed about Plame's identity being leaked?

Woodward was first informed about Plame's identity being leaked in June 2003, more than two years before the news became public.

3. How did Woodward learn about Plame's identity being leaked?

Woodward learned about Plame's identity being leaked through a confidential source, who was later revealed to be former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage.

4. Did Woodward report on Plame's identity being leaked at the time he first learned about it?

No, Woodward did not report on Plame's identity being leaked at the time he first learned about it. He claims that he did not realize the significance of the information and did not want to jeopardize his relationship with his source.

5. Why is Woodward's knowledge about Plame's identity being leaked important in the larger context of the Plame affair?

Woodward's knowledge about Plame's identity being leaked is important because it raises questions about the extent of the leak and who else may have known about it at the time. It also calls into question the actions of other journalists who were reporting on the Plame affair and their potential knowledge of the leak.
