Two spaceships travel away from the earth.

In summary, according to the formula provided by Carl, in the rest frame of the earth, the rate at which the distance between the two spaceships changes is 1.5 times the speed of light. This was confirmed by Halls, who mistakenly answered a different question before being corrected by Doc.

They go in opposite directions. In the rest frame of the earth, the speed of each spaceship is [tex]0.75 c[/tex].

In the rest frame of the earth, what is the rate at which the distance between the two spaceships changes?

Surely you should know the formula for this. If, in a given frame, two objects, moving in opposite directions, have speeds, relative to an object motionless in that frame, of v1 and v2 then their speeds, relative to one another in that frame is [tex]\frac{v_1+ v_2}{1+ \frac{v_1v_2}{c^2}}[/tex].

[tex]1.5 c[/tex], of course.

(Halls answered a different question: What is the rate at which the distance between the ships changes in the rest frame of either ship.)

Oops. Thanks, Doc.

1. What is the purpose of the two spaceships traveling away from the earth?

The purpose of the two spaceships traveling away from the earth could vary depending on the situation. It could be for exploration, scientific research, or to gather data about the universe.

2. How far can the two spaceships travel away from the earth?

The distance the two spaceships can travel away from the earth is unlimited, as long as they have enough fuel and resources to sustain the journey.

3. What technology is used to power the two spaceships?

The two spaceships are most likely powered by rocket engines that use a combination of fuel and oxidizer to generate thrust and propel the spacecraft forward. They may also use solar panels to capture and convert sunlight into electrical energy for various systems on board.

4. Will the two spaceships ever return to earth?

It depends on the mission objectives and the capabilities of the spacecraft. Some may be designed for one-way trips, while others may have the ability to return to earth after completing their mission.

5. How long will it take for the two spaceships to reach their destination?

The time it takes for the two spaceships to reach their destination will depend on various factors such as the distance to the destination, the speed of the spacecraft, and any potential obstacles or detours along the way. It could range from a few months to several years.
