What are the latest results in visual recognition by machines? How good have computers become in recognizing faces, etc.?

No answers? Come on.

The reason why I'm interested is because visual recognition abilities are always cited first when comparing machine and human intelligence.

Recognizing things gives the human brain, even the very young one, no difficulties, but it's a huge computational and often impossible task for artificial devices.

Well, I think you all knew that.

So has there been progress?

When you first posted I googled on "face recognition software" and found a ton of stuff. Why don't you try it?
