Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the socioeconomic implications of corrosion, particularly focusing on iron, and seeks resources for understanding both the impacts and prevention strategies related to corrosion in various infrastructures.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests websites for information on the socioeconomic implications of corrosion, indicating difficulty in finding relevant resources.
  • Another participant questions the specific type of corrosion being discussed, suggesting that clarity on this point may aid in finding information.
  • A participant specifies interest in the socioeconomic implications of iron corrosion rather than general prevention methods.
  • Suggestions are made to consider replacement costs for various infrastructures, such as roads, bridges, and pipelines, as well as the costs associated with catastrophic failures versus maintenance.
  • Reference is made to the significant costs of corrosion prevention mentioned in a materials science/engineering textbook, highlighting the financial implications of corrosion management.
  • Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying degrees of uncertainty regarding the specific focus of the inquiry, with some agreeing on the importance of socioeconomic implications while others emphasize the need for clarity on the type of corrosion being discussed. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best resources and specific aspects of corrosion to focus on.

    Contextual Notes

Participants have not yet established a clear definition of the scope of corrosion being discussed, which may affect the relevance of the resources suggested.

    Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in the socioeconomic aspects of corrosion, infrastructure maintenance, and prevention strategies may find this discussion relevant.

Hi all, I'm doing a project on socioeconomic implications of corrosion and prevention. Do you have any good websites where I can get information of this topic? It seems to me that it's kinda difficult to find relavent information from the internet. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if I can help with this, but I will ask one question:

Corrosion of what, specifically?

Knowing that might help.

For example iron, and I want to get more information on socioeconomic implications rather than corrosion and preventions.

Thanks

I'm going to kick this over to Other Sciences to see if it gets some more action there.

You can look at replacement costs for "infrastructure," roads, bridges, pipelines, sewer systems, dams, and the costs of catastrophic failures in such vs. maintenance. The service lives of merchant vessels vs. drydocking and rebuilding, undercoating auto bodies vs. rusting fenders falling off and filling the ditches of the Jersey tnpk, scheduled aircraft inspection and replacement of critical airframe components (particularly in marine or near marine service environments), galvanized steel vs. "un-" in farm storage buildings, warehouses, commercial structures, -----

A materials science/engineering textbook would be a good resource. In one of my classes they mentioned how much corrosion prevention costs. The numbers are staggering.
