Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the anticipation of AMD's success in producing 64-bit CPUs and their potential impact on gaming and computing power. Participants express their hopes for both hardware advancements and software adaptation in operating systems.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express hope that AMD will make 64-bit CPUs the preferred choice over 32-bit CPUs for enhanced gaming and computing capabilities.
  • Others emphasize the importance of software developers effectively utilizing the new 64-bit technology, referencing past issues with 32-bit systems.
  • One participant mentions their intention to purchase the Athlon 64 due to the high prices of Opterons and Xeons, indicating a preference for consumer-level products.
  • Another participant notes that the Athlon 64 is expected to outperform Xeon processors, highlighting a competitive aspect between AMD and Intel products.
  • There is a mention of the Opteron being a server chip designed to compete with Xeon, with a consumer version (codename Clawhammer) anticipated to be released later in the year.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the potential benefits of 64-bit CPUs, but there are differing views on the effectiveness of software adaptation and the competitive landscape between AMD and Intel processors.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the performance of 64-bit CPUs versus 32-bit systems remain unverified, and there is uncertainty regarding the actual impact of software development on the utilization of new hardware.

I really hope AMD will be successful to make 64bits CPU the popular choice over 32bits CPU, so that we can have awesome 3D gaming and unprecedented computing power.

Well.
What i hope is that the programmers of well-known operating systems (like Windows) will be able to use this new technology effectively, not like they misused the 32bit systems when they were first introduced ...

well, I'm going to buy the Athlon 64, cause the prices of these Opterons (and Xeons) are... erm... high.

The game performace is looking very

it outperforms Xeon.
