Given velocity and acceleration, determine magnetic field

SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on determining the magnetic field components acting on an electron with a velocity of 1.20 x 104 m/s in the positive x direction and an acceleration of 2.00 x 1012 m/s2 in the positive z direction, within a uniform electric field of 20.0 N/C also in the positive z direction. The derived magnetic field components are Bx (any value), By = -2.6 mT, and Bz = 0. The discussion emphasizes that while certain components of the magnetic field can be determined, others remain indeterminate due to the nature of the forces involved.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Lorentz force law
  • Familiarity with vector components in physics
  • Knowledge of electric fields and their effects on charged particles
  • Basic principles of electromagnetism
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the Lorentz force equation in detail
  • Learn about the relationship between electric and magnetic fields in electromagnetic theory
  • Explore the concept of uniform fields and their applications in particle motion
  • Investigate the implications of varying magnetic field components on charged particles
USEFUL FOR

Physics students, educators, and professionals in electromagnetism, particularly those focusing on particle dynamics in electric and magnetic fields.

an electron has a velocity of 1.20 x 10^4 m/s(in the positive x direction), and an acceleration of 2.00 x 10^12 m/s^2 (in the positive z direction) in a uniform electric and magnetic field. if the electric field has magnitude of 20.0N/C (in the positive z direction), what can you determine about the magnetic field in the region? what can you not determine?
(Please show steps and why, the correct answers i got are Bx(any value), By = -2.6mT, Bz=0)
