What started the hot/cold ice age cycle?


What started the hot/cold ice age cycle?
This did not exist for most of the Earth's existence but started before there were many people around.The Earth's climate sudennly cooled but why.And why the hot/cold cycle after the initial cooling that has lasted for thousands of years?
