Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of generating electrical current using magnetic fields and moving ferrous metals, with a focus on the principles behind electric generators. Participants explore the feasibility of a hypothetical energy generation idea involving Earth's magnetic field and orbital structures.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant recalls the principle of generating electricity through magnetic fields and seeks clarification on the requirements and calculations involved.
  • Another participant identifies the concept as related to electric generators and provides a resource for further understanding.
  • A later contribution presents a speculative idea involving Earth's magnetic field, a massive orbital ring, and space elevators as a potential source of free energy, inviting skepticism about its feasibility.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the basic principles of electric generators, but the speculative energy generation idea remains contested and lacks consensus on its viability.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the feasibility of the proposed energy generation method are not fully explored, and the discussion does not resolve the technical requirements or calculations mentioned.

Hey, its been over 6 years since i studied physics seriously, was letting my mind wonder today when i hit upon an idea unfortunately i can't remember the exact physics involved.

Basically i remember something about being able to create an electrical current using magnetic fields and ferous metals moving within this field, can't remember the exact requirements or calculations though, could someone please help me?

Thanks one and all,
Squire

Just point out, no longer in education, sorry if this would be classed as the homework section though :S

Welcome to PF Devious,

What you describe is an electric generator. http://amasci.com/amateur/coilgen.html" has a video demonstration as well as some elementary theory regarding [AC] generators.

Nope, it isn't classed as homework and you've posted it in the right place :approve:

thanks, and now for my idea (its a gradeous one so feel free to laugh and the impossiblity of it) basically, the magnetic field is Earth's, the rotation circuit is a massive ring in orbit of the world, thirdly several of the "space elveators" that NASA are on about these days act as power cables to the surface of the planet, result, massive "free" energy source.
