this is a favorite poem about the universe

sanctus, sanctus, sanctus
dominus deus Sabaoth
pleni sunt coeli et terra
gloria tua

as I hear it, the hebrew word Sabaoth (the heavenly host)
means the laws of physics, and the dominus deus is
nature itself

another poem about the universe:

to see a world in a grain of sand
and a heaven in a wild flower,
hold infinity in the palm of your hand
and eternity in an hour

another, about discovery

then felt I like some watcher of the skies
when a new planet swims into his ken
or like stout Cortez when, with eagle eyes,
he stared at the Pacific, and all his men
looked at each other with a wild surmise,
silent upon a peak in Darien

----------

and Ulysses' speech from the Inferno:

"frati," dissi, "chi per cento miglia
perigli siete giunti al occidente,
a questa tanto picciola vigilia

dei nostri sensi ch'e del rimanente
non volete negar l'esperienza
di retro al sol, del mondo senza gente

considerate le vostre semenza
fatti non foste a viver come brutti
ma per sequir virtute e conoscenza."

--------------------

[literal transl.:
brothers, I said, who through a myriad
dangers have reached the west,
to this too brief time remaining

when our senses are awake
do not deny experience
of the solar path and the unpeopled world

consider your roots
you were not made to live like animals
but to follow virtue and knowledge]

these are as I recall them, with
whatever mistakes of spelling (which in the case of
the Dante would probably be quite a few) and
punctuation

Poems & Song Lyrics

quddusaliquddus and marcus,

The Odyssey by Homer is my choice for the all-time great poem, bridging primitive and modern, a superlative classic.

Modern harmonies beats out lyrics most anyday.

Whence cometh your nomen, quddusaliquddus?

Nelly Furtado - Try

All I know
Is everything is not as it's sold
but the more I grow the less I know
And I have lived so many lives
Though I'm not old
And the more I see, the less I grow
The fewer the seeds the more I sow

Then I see you standing there
Wanting more from me
And all I can do is try
Then I see you standing there
Wanting more from me
And all I can do is try

I wish I hadn't seen all of the realness
And all the real people are really not real at all
The more I learn the more I cry
As I say goodbye to the way of life
I thought I had designed for me

Then I see you standing there
Wanting more from me
And all I can do is try
Then I see you standing there
I'm all I'll ever be
But all I can do is try
Try

All of the moments that already passed
We'll try to go back and make them last
All of the things we want each other to be
We never will be
And that's wonderful, and that's life
And that's you, baby
This is me, baby
And we are, we are, we are, we are
Free
In our love
We are free in our love

Chantel Kreviazuk - Waiting

Well it all comes down to the things that I never even wanted
I should live my life without holding on to you
But its hard to see the sky through the clouds when its raining...
I know somewhere it's blue
Well it all comes down to the love that was never really given
I should've taken more than time to get the truth
And its hard to believe that you couldn't recognize my tears
I glued them on for you.
Waiting to fall apart
Waiting and it all comes down to you
When it all breaks down I won't be the one that's running
But under every rock and stone I try to hide
And it's hard to believe that behind this smile there are tears...
I hold them all inside
Waiting to fall apart
Waiting and it comes down
Waiting to fall apart
Waiting and it all comes down to you
I hear you calling, I know that voice
I hear you calling, I have no choice
I hear you calling, I know that voice
I hear you calling...
Waiting...
Well it all comes down to the things that I never even wanted
I should live my life without holding on to you
And it's hard to believe that you couldn't recognize my tears
I glued them on for you.
Waiting to fall apart
Waiting and it all comes down... To you.

No ballad beats George Michael's "Careless Whispers" and "Jesus to a Child"

I'l assume we've all heard Careless Whispers;

Jesus to a Child:
=================================
Kindness In your eyes
I guess You heard me cry
You smiled at me
Like Jesus to a child

I'm blessed I know
Heaven sent And Heaven stole
You smiled at me
Like Jesus to a child

And what have I learned
From all this pain
I thought I'd never feel the same
About anyone
Or anything again

But now I know
When you find love
When you know that it exists
Then the lover that you miss
Will come to you on those cold, cold nights

When you've been loved
When you know it holds such bliss
Then the lover that you kissed
Will comfort you when there's no hope in sight

Sadness In my eyes
No one guessed
Or no one tried
You smiled at me
Like Jesus to a child

Loveless and cold
With your last breath
You saved my soul
You smiled at me
Like Jesus to a child

And what have I learned
From all these tears
I've waited for you all those years
And just when it began
He took your love away

But I still say
When you find love
When you know that it exists
Then the lover that you miss
Will come to you on those cold, cold nights

When you've been loved
When you know it holds such bliss
Then the lover that you kissed
Will comfort you when there's no hope in sight

So the words you could not say
I'll sing them for you
And the love we would have made
I'll make it for two

For every single memory
Has become a part of me
You will always be My love

Well I've been loved
So I know just what love is
And the lover that I kissed
Is always by my side

Oh the lover I still miss
Was Jesus to a child
=================================
...but it's really gotta be heard to be appreciated
:D

quddusaliquddus
"Whence cometh your nomen, quddusaliquddus"?
Where does your user name come from?
Apr30-04, 11:28 AM   #11

It's not my real name. It's just what I read written on a piece of paper in front of me while I was choosing the login. It was "Quddus Ali" and I added the extra "Quddus" to make it a little bit more interesting.

Now...eh-hem... whence cometh your nomen, Loren Booda?

Why the question: Didn't you know how to pronounce it or something?
Apr30-04, 05:14 PM   #12

Mine is my given name, believe it or not.

Yours sounded Latin; "ali" meaning "some," and "quod" meaning "that which."

Quote by Loren Booda

Yours sounded Latin;...
It sounded a bit latin to me too.

I believe "aliquid" is the Latin word for "something" or "anything"

Elton John - I Want Love

I want love, but it's impossible
A man like me, so irresponsible
A man like me is dead in places
Other men feel liberated

I can't love, shot full of holes
Don't feel nothing, I just feel cold
Don't feel nothing, just old scars
Toughening up around my heart

But I want love, just a different kind
I want love, won't break me down
Won't brick me up, won't fence me in
I want a love that don't mean a thing
That's the love I want, I want love

I want love on my own terms
After everything I've ever learned
Me, I carry too much baggage
Oh man I've seen so much traffic

But I want love, just a different kind
I want love, won't break me down
Won't brick me up, won't fence me in
I want a love that don't mean a thing
That's the love I want, I want love

So bring it on, I've been bruised
Don't give me love that's clean and smooth
I'm ready for the rougher stuff
No sweet romance, I've had enough

A man like me is dead in places
Other men feel liberated

But I want love, just a different kind
I want love, won't break me down
Won't brick me up, won't fence me in
I want a love that don't mean a thing
That's the love I want, I want love

I want love, just a different kind
I want love, won't break me down
Won't brick me up, won't fence me in
I want a love that don't mean a thing
That's the love I want, I want love
