Run Your Car On Water?

Has anyone bought this or know someone who has?

The claim is that you can get Brown's Gas from water and use it to power your car.

Generating H2 + O2 from water = easy
Running a car on it = not too hard
Getting more energy out of the H2+O2 than you put in to split it = impossible

Apparently their using the battery to split it. So, you're saying why not just run your car on your battery?

The point is that you cannot get more energy out of Hydrogen and Oxygen made through electrolysis than you originally put in. Therefore, trying to run your car off of Hydrogen you create using energy from the engine is the same trying to make a perpetual motion machine. Like plugging a generator into a motor, that powers the generator. Efficiencies kill you and the machine doesn't work.

If you search for this subject, you will see that this topic has been covered many times already.

To me this sounds like a perpetual motion machine and against the 2nd law of thermodynamics! How can electricity produced by taking torque from the drive shaft produce enough hydrogen to offset the energy cost of production in an ICE?

It's been dicussed a few times here. Of course, it's bunk.

Doing a search for "HHO" or "hydrogen electrolysis" can give you other threads on this subject that have been beaten to death.

Setting aside for now the question of whether this device does anything at all, they make a huge mistake in their logic: they assume that a load added to the alternator of a car adds no load to the engine. That's wrong.

Yep, this is probably one of the most common misconceptions I have heard.

Defenders of these "HHO machines" think that an alternator spins freely (e.g. with no torque required) while producing electrical current. This is of course impossible, but explaining it to them can be, shall we say, frustrating.
