Early warning signs of heart attack.

Quote by hypatia View Post
All last week my husband complained that his arms felt weak. No pain, just weak. Today he complained of shortness of breath. I said maybe we should go to the ER, just to have them check it out...he said no. But I kept on nagging, and then he said, I'm ok, just something does not feel right. Alarms went off in my head, remembering the OP of this thread. I rushed him to the ER.
At 3 pm he underwent Angioplasty, two arteries were 90% blocked. Stints are in place, and I get to bring him home in 2 days.

Thank you so much Astro for posting that article, with the key words "feeling that something was not right". I can't even express how grateful I am, it saved my husbands life.
Oh my goodness! Glad you got him there in time!

Actually it was Monique.

I think your body will let you know when something is not right ("an overwhelming feeling that something was not right"), you shouldn't let your brain dismiss it.

Way to go, Hypatia!!!

Incidentely when it was my turn to get one, there were no early signs whatsoever. It was Christmas eve and one of the neighbours daughters had fallen through the ice in the pond in front of the house. So when I saw that, I rushed to the house, got a few big poles and rushed back. I'm sure I broke the 200 meter speed record and not by a little bit. I put the poles on the ice which was way to thin to carry a persons weight and started to work my way to the girl on the poles. However, somebody else had called 112 (911) and a scuba diver of the fire department overtook me and rescued the girl. So that ended the hero story. Nevertheless the adrenaline may have pushed me over the edge.

An hour later I was in the hospital with a dozen mammoths pressing on my chest. It was diagnosed to be methione-whatever-deficiency which seems to cause the arteries to get rough, which can cause clogging. It appears that the daily folic acid suppresses the problem nicely now, but that was what stopped me from flying.

Wow! I am glad you pushed him to go to the ER.

I posted the thread with the intent to raise awareness of heart attacks. They are way more common than should be.

And as Evo indicated it was Monique who wrote the phrase, "an overwhelming feeling that something was not right", which is a great way to put it. So special thanks to Monique!

I wish hubby a rapid recovery!

I'm so happy your alarm bells were raised, you did the right thing by taking control of the situation. It were actually the words from Astronuc's article that I emphasized, because they felt really important. I think all the people who read this thread will now have them imprinted in their mind so that they can take appropriate action

I got to bring him home last night, and he is doing very well. He is going to half to give up a few bad habits, he seems happy to do it, and just very grateful to be alive.

Big group HUGS, thank you all.

"Silent" heart attacks more common than thought
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090417/...s_heart_attack

CHICAGO (Reuters) – A study using new imaging technology found "silent" heart attacks may be far more common, and more deadly, than suspected, U.S. researchers said Friday.

Some studies estimate that these often painless heart attacks, also known as unrecognized myocardial infarctions, affect 200,000 people in the United States each year.

But Dr. Han Kim of Duke University in North Carolina suspects the numbers may be far higher.

"No one has fully understood how often these heart attacks occur and what they mean, in terms of prognosis," Kim, whose study will appear next week in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Medicine, said in a statement.

Doctors usually can tell whether a patient has had a recent heart attack by looking for signature changes on a test of the heart's electrical activity called an electrocardiogram and by checking for certain enzymes in the blood.

For a heart attack that might have occurred in the past, doctors look for changes on an electrocardiogram called a Q-wave, a marker for damaged tissue.

But not all silent heart attacks result in Q-waves.
. . . .
Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, followed by cancer and stroke.
