SUMMARY

The Hall effect is a definitive method to distinguish between p-type and n-type semiconductors. In p-type semiconductors, holes serve as the majority charge carriers, resulting in a positive Hall voltage. Conversely, n-type semiconductors have electrons as the majority charge carriers, leading to a negative Hall voltage. Proper connection of the voltmeter is crucial for accurate measurement of the Hall voltage polarity.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of semiconductor physics
  • Familiarity with the Hall effect
  • Knowledge of voltage measurement techniques
  • Basic circuit connection skills
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of the Hall effect in detail
  • Learn about the characteristics of p-type and n-type semiconductors
  • Explore practical applications of the Hall effect in electronic devices
  • Study methods for measuring Hall voltage accurately
USEFUL FOR

Students and professionals in physics, electrical engineering, and materials science who are interested in semiconductor technology and its applications.

This question is difficult to answer without the use of figures, so look here:

Pay particular attention to the polarity of the hall voltage and how you connect the voltmeter.

Zz.

In particular, the polarity of the Hall Voltage depends on the sign of the majority charge carriers. eg: p-type => holes are majority charge carriers => positive charge.
