audacity help?

apparently you can use the plot spectrum and/or the spectrum view on adacity to find the frequency of a recording.
can someone please tell me how to find the frequencies or point me in the direction of software that can give me a frequency?
also what is the plot spectrum actually showing me. i cant figure it out.
