voice controlled devices

i am trying to build an electronic circuit (with out a micro controller)that will depend on voice.The circuit will be used to drive circuits with predefined words.i am till now able to design a time depended circuit i.e depending on word length.Is there any other property of the input voice signal that can be used to make the circuit more reliable?
