help on designing a device to measure light intensity

1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data

I have been asked to design a device or assemble existing devices that will measure light intensity from a source across diifferent places on a table, the data has to be recorded electronically on a computer as well, the position of the measuring point has also to be recorded electronically

2. Relevant equations

the device needs to measure the light intensity at 8 points on 50cm table

3. The attempt at a solution
the solution needs to be quite complicated, (as in more complicated than measuring with a ruler and typing the reults in on a pc), any ideas on circuits to measure the intensity and positioning, using a pic chip with programming and a way of connecting this to a pc??
