Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around solving for the variable Y in a mathematical equation involving exponential terms and fractions. Participants are attempting to clarify the equation's format and derive the value of Y through various interpretations and simplifications.

Discussion Character

  • Mathematical reasoning, Homework-related, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant presents the equation in a specific format and claims to find Y=4.
  • Another participant expresses confusion regarding the initial equation's presentation.
  • A third participant reformulates the equation using LaTeX for clarity and suggests that Y=3.
  • A subsequent participant agrees with the reformulation and also concludes that Y=3, attributing a mistake to the first participant's calculation.
  • Another participant further simplifies the equation and confirms that Y=3, aligning with the previous claims.
  • A later reply acknowledges the assistance from others in clarifying the equation.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There is no consensus on the value of Y, as one participant claims Y=4 while others assert Y=3. The discussion reflects competing views on the correct interpretation and solution of the equation.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not resolved the discrepancies in their calculations, and there may be missing assumptions or steps in the simplification process that affect the conclusions drawn.

solve for Y

I get 4

I have no idea what you wrote.

Is this what you mean ?

[tex]\frac {0.0002} {0.0256} = \frac {(0.1)^2} {(0.4)^2} \frac {(0.1)^Y} {(0.2)^Y}[/tex]

If so, then Y=3.

2.0E-4/2.56E-2 = (0.1^2/0.4^2) * (0.1^x/0.2^x)

x = 3

Looks like you just made a small mistake somwhere.

It all simplifies to 1/128=[2^(-y)]/16, and then 1/8=2^(-y), and further 8=2^y.

Thus I agree with Nico, y=3.
