What is the nearest supernova candidate (maybe Betelguese?) to the Earth?
The discussion centers around identifying the nearest supernova candidate to Earth, with a specific mention of Betelgeuse and HR8210 as potential candidates. Participants explore the implications of a supernova event and seek information about the location of HR8210 in the sky.
Participants generally agree on HR8210 being a notable supernova candidate, but there is no consensus on the implications or the significance of Betelgeuse in this context. The discussion remains open with multiple viewpoints on the topic.
Some participants reference specific tools and resources for locating stars, indicating a reliance on external databases and tools for accurate information. There may be limitations in the availability of data regarding HR8210's location.
Where is HR8210 located in the sky? It's amazing that a simple search under HR8210 doesn't bring up anything with a location. Thanks.LURCH said:That would be HR8210, discovered sometime in the 90's, but only recently recognised as a type-1 supernova candidate. It's only about 150 ly away, and be the end of us if it went off now.
