This day has not been really fun. I called sales representatives at the state's biggest Subaru dealerships and told them what I wanted quoted and how I wanted it quoted, including "price out the door" totals. Since then, I have gotten whiny follow-ups, saying things like "I could have beaten them by $700", and when I pointed out that I told them that I had solicited bids from the big three, they claimed not to have known that up-front. I'm so sick of dealing with crooks and liars. I was in sales for a lot of years, and one thing that helped me steal accounts from my competitors was that I would never lie to a client.

Apparently auto-sales functionaries didn't get the memo.
I think they were expecting you to negotiate, to call the high bidders back with the low bid and say, "So and so's offering it to me at $500 cheaper than you. Can you give it to me cheaper than them?" No one will give you their rock bottom price first. You have to squeeze them down by playing them off each other. They're expecting it.

You may be right, but I don't want to waste hours of my life playing that game. I told them all exactly what I wanted and told them each that I was soliciting bids from each of their largest competitors. They each had a shot, and I told them all that the most aggressive pricing within my parameters would win my business.

When the taped menu says "this call may be monitored for quality assurance", don't believe it. When someone calls, and say that they want to buy a $25K vehicle, the first words out of the salesman's mouth should be, "Can I get your name and phone number please?" That didn't happen until well into the call in the second dealership that I called. If I saw that kind of incompetence in my sales staff, he would have been fired immediately. Nobody was monitoring that call.

Reading RPs Road to Reality, I've got a phd but I'm already run into mud in chapter 5, logarithms, why does he use the variable z as corresponding to three different things in the space of three paragraphys, why? How the hell does this guys brain work? Does stuff like this just make sense to him intuitively. He is the ultimate physicist (I'm an engineer I'm afraid) I guarantee all his papers are filled with stuff like, it is immediately obvious that, it should be apparent that etc.

I first saw this on the evening news tonight. Instead of falling into the dining-hall decor, the Belfast soup kitchen has turned its floor-plan into a theme more appropriate for a cozy restaurant. With small tables and chairs, and with coffee-and pastry hours, patrons can get some much-needed warmth in the winter months and chat with friends (new and old). A whole lot nicer than sitting in lines of benches along cafeteria tables. Good for them.

Has this ever happened to you?

I did that once too. I was in a Third World foreign country at the airport, jet-lagged and stupid, walked into the bathroom and thought "Hmm, they have urinals in the ladies' room in this country...how interesting". When I came out of the stall, a man was in there and laughed at me. It's one of those things that seems funny after a bit of time has passed.

Many years ago, I found myself in a small unfamiliar bar in a cellar of a commercial building. I had to "use the facilities" and the one-toilet bathrooms were labeled "setters" and "pointers". Once I was in the (wrong) bathroom, it became obvious to me that I had missed the joke.

It was about to happen. I just went in, and a man there laughed at me.. THEN, I knew I was in the wrong place.

*wonders if h didn't laugh would I still proceed?*

One of the first lessons all salesperson should learn (my boss taught me) is "when to walk away from a sale". Potential customers that make too many demands and are a PITA before the sale, will be a nightmare after the sale.

Successful salespeople will not give away the store, their responsibility is to their employer, their job is to make the most profitable sale for their company and not waste their time with the nitpickers. As soon as I realized that all a person wanted was for me to give them the lowest price. I "walked away". Of course I was selling networks, not widgets/cars, and I would have that customer as my client if I won the contract, so getting a good customer was very important.

If you want a great deal, find the worst salesperson, someone about to lose their job, they don't care and will do anything for a sale.

Isn't that strange. I was in a stall at the mall today when a woman's voice called out, is this the women's room. I responded that it was the men's room without stopping to think whether she was lost or I was. She was.

Many years ago I was a temp at a huge, remarkable research building. Since I was a temp, I was never given the proper introductory tour of the facility. But it was clear that the building was laid out with the south and north mirror-images of each other. So I assumed that was true for the bathrooms, too.

You know what happens when you assume...
