Ultrasound heating of metals

There is a very little on this subject out there on the Internet.

Can ultrasound, form 1 to 20 MHz, if applied for hours on end, seriously heat up the metal, like to 300 deg C or even higher.

Is there a way to calculate the amount of heat buildup, depending on the frequency and the amplitude of the sound in solid?

Have you googled ultrasonic welding?

Re: Ultrasound heating of metals

never heard of such a thing. I'll give it a go.

In meantime, if you know about ultrasound heating of metals, particularly if you have any formula that can calculate it, please join in.

I googled 'ultrasonic welding', it seems that it applies only to plastics.

While it may be more typical for plastics, I can assure you it can also be used for metals.

Re: Ultrasound heating of metals

When you mention it, I was pretty amazed at whole this ultrasonic welding thing. I even read that two different metals, pressed together and shaken by ultrasound, would actually diffuse into each other, so much that the first metal will start coming out of the back of the second one. Amazing.

Kind off, cold alloy making. I wander weather those diffused metals actually have the same properties as alloys and how deep, into each other, can this diffusion go.
