Thread Starting Page

What is the logic used to determine which page of a thread you start on? For example, I'll click on a thread and land on page 5 of 6.

Are you clicking the title or the page numbers?

Also I have seen a feature on some forums that brings you to the last post you have read in that thread.

The title. I guess it could be the last post I read, though sometimes it doesn't seem like it.
