What's next for the web? : Mash-ups and Pipes

I understand the concept of a mash-up web page or mash-up web.

A web mashup is a web application that takes information from one or more sources and presents it in a new way or with a unique layout.

But, what are Pipes? This concept is not clear to me. Could anyone clarify?
