Once upon a time, the bursar at the (very small) college I worked for decreed that he must approve any requisition for more than $5.00!

At that time, we had a central "copying office" where they ran off tests, etc. I was in the practice of going up there when ever I ran out of ditto masters (yes, long ago) and getting a box. Now, I was told that, since the cost of a box was slightly more than $5, I would need a signed approval from the bursar. I said, "well, in that case, just give me half a box". No, we can't do that, they said!

I walked across campus to the bursar's offce. He then talked to me for several minutes about exactly why I needed ditto masters, what I used them for, etc., finally telling me to tell them that I was to be given half a box! I went back to the copy office and told them that the bursar (who was, after all, their boss) had said they were to give me half a box. The woman, just said, "Oh, here!" and handed me a full box of ditto masters!
