Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the phenomenon of whale flatulence, specifically focusing on a reported instance involving a minke whale in Antarctica. Participants explore humorous and speculative connections to other topics, such as the Bermuda Triangle, while also engaging in light-hearted banter about the implications of whale gas.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Humorous

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express curiosity about the implications of whale flatulence, with one suggesting a humorous connection to the idea of whales blowing smoke rings.
  • Another participant questions whether there is a link between whale flatulence and the phenomenon of mysterious bubbles sinking ships in the Bermuda Triangle.
  • There are humorous suggestions about igniting whale gas, with one participant warning about the potential dangers of such an action, citing the large volume of gas involved.
  • Responses include playful banter and challenges regarding the seriousness of the suggestions made, with some participants expressing frustration over the tone of the conversation.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the seriousness of the discussion, with some treating it humorously while others emphasize the potential dangers of the proposed actions. The conversation remains light-hearted but contentious regarding the appropriateness of the humor.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes speculative connections and humorous suggestions that may not be grounded in scientific reasoning. The tone varies significantly among participants, reflecting differing attitudes towards the topic.

Whale flatulence stuns scientists

The researchers claim this is the first photograph of a minke whale letting one go in the icy waters of Antarctica. It was taken from the bow of a research vessel.

Do you suppose given a big enough cigar it could blow a smoke ring too?

I wonder if there's any connection

Cheese, no sense of humor, and no respect either.

See this is a Science Forum, least last I had Heard, and in any kind of "Real Science application" what you are suggesting, although humorous I suppose, would work out to be very dangerous, given the fact that the scientists who reported upon this event commented upon the fact that they could smell this cloud of gas as it broke over the prow of the ship, ergo it was a LARGE volume of gas that would, when someone humorously (silly, and stupidly too) goes up to Lite it, probably blow them right off of the ship.

That is why I suggested that you do it, cause in a reality, in a/the real setting, it would be a really really silly/stupid thing to try. Not only is there a distinct possiblity that you would be seriously injured, (not that that matters?) but you might just hurt several others as well...Not known as a bright thing to do! and it makes kinda certain that you would not be the kind of person invited to go along on such a venture.

Understand me now?
