Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around perceptions of normality and individuality, exploring how participants define themselves in relation to societal norms. It includes personal reflections on behavior, social interactions, and the concept of normality versus uniqueness.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants question the definition of normality, suggesting that if everyone claims to be abnormal, it could redefine what is considered normal.
  • Others express a sense of normality based on their jobs and lifestyles, while acknowledging that everyone has unique traits.
  • One participant claims to "redefine normal," indicating a personal interpretation of the concept.
  • Several participants reflect on their efforts to fit in with what they perceive as normal people, noting that they often feel different or outside the norm.
  • One participant humorously describes their coping mechanism as a bizarre sense of humor, which they consider normal for themselves despite receiving strange looks from others.
  • A participant expresses a stark contrast to normality, describing themselves as engaging in reckless and dangerous activities.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants exhibit a range of views on normality, with no consensus on what constitutes being normal or abnormal. Some feel normal while others strongly identify as outside the norm, leading to a diverse and contested discussion.

Contextual Notes

Participants' definitions of normality appear to depend heavily on personal experiences and social contexts, which may not be universally applicable. The discussion reflects a variety of subjective interpretations without resolving the underlying complexities.

If everyone who answers this says they are not normal, does that become the norm?

Most people perceive me as normal. Most people are wrong.

I am normal in the way that i have a normal job, a normal car and normal other stuff, but i think everyone is unique in there own way, as cliched as that sounds its true.

Other:

I redefine normal.

I seem perfectly normal to me!

I have examined my patterns of both thought and deed, and found that they fit perfectly into the perameters established by my own behavior.

So Normal that it is completely uncommon.

I find myself to be way outside
the norm. I had put in a lot of
effort learning how to act normal
when I'm around normal people. I
don't think any of them are really fooled but things go more smoothly
if they sense you are at least putting some effort into fitting
in.

Sometimes I can fool myself into THINKING I'm normal. Especially when I am WITH normal people. While I get along very well with 'normal' people, I'm frequently hit by the realization that I'm the only one that I've cracked up! I get many strange looks. Mostly from my friends. A somewhat bizarre and perverse sense of humor gets me through life. This is normal for ME. Mostly I make people laugh a lot, but those strange looks...they do pop up quite frequently. So I don't know... Does any of this sound 'normal' to anyone?

I think Lurch said it best. "I seem perfectly normal to me!
I have examined my patterns of both thought and deed, and found that they fit perfectly into the perameters established by my own behavior."

Zooby! I know someone JUST LIKE YOU! He spends a whole LOT of time on his computer.

Zooby! I know someone JUST LIKE YOU! He spends a whole LOT of time on his computer.Does this mean he is just like me
because he spends a lot of time on
his computer, or that he spends
a lot of time on his computer be-
cause he is just like me?

What am I like, anyway?
