How is synthetic blood, HBOC-201, made? Does is require cow's blood?

I am trying to find out if what is called "synthetic" blood, HBOC-201, is manufactured, or if every batch of it requires more cow's blood I read "derived" from cow's blood. Does that just mean cow's blood was used to invent it and it is now reproduced without it?
