Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the idea of building a 'Physics' Gun using various hardware components. Participants explore the feasibility and components needed for such a project, with a focus on engaging students in physics through hands-on activities.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests building a 'Physics' Gun from available hardware parts.
  • Another participant inquires about the sources for obtaining the necessary parts.
  • A suggestion is made to use materials from an old motor for wiring, indicating a resourceful approach.
  • There is a critical tone regarding the educational value of such projects, questioning if this is appropriate for teaching students.
  • One participant proposes using a Class IV CO2 Laser as a more exciting alternative, highlighting its potential to engage students but also raising safety concerns.
  • A later reply defends the idea of using engaging projects in teaching physics as a way to attract interest from students who may not typically be inclined towards the subject.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the appropriateness and educational value of building a 'Physics' Gun, with some supporting the idea as a means to engage students and others questioning its suitability.

Contextual Notes

If so, build a fun 'Physics' Gun from a few bits of hardware!

Have fun.

Ahh Adrian... where can I get some of these parts?

Bits lying around the Lab. Unwind an old motor if you need wire!

Is this what you teach your students?

If you're that bored, why not skip the old stuff and go straight to the Class IV CO2 Laser. Guaranteed to keep the fire department, local police and parents in a foaming frenzy:

Or if you're ambitious, try the ruby rod laser- hand held and operates on 8 "D" batteries

take that one in for science class

Of course! If you want to try to interest the students in Physics classes you have to make it exciting (to the non-physicist types anyway).
