I do not think it is too big.
As long as the width is less than about 1000 pixels you should be okay.

Here's mine, I prefer to think of it as: natural subtle complexity... beauty...

All my icons live on my toolbar below the image, where they should be, hehe... others may disagree, but it works for me.

P.S. If you have Windows 7, just use the snipping tool to capture, save as a .jpg file and attach as a thumbnail, piece of cake... it will be under the thumbnail file limit size.

Use it all the time when my images are too big, way easier than resizing using some photo program. Just a little trick, now two of us have it.
