Question: magnetic field blocking

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the question of whether there are substances that can block a magnetic field, exploring various materials and effects related to magnetic shielding and superconductivity.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks about substances that can block a magnetic field.
  • Another participant suggests "mu metals" as a potential solution but notes the limitations of shielding effectiveness based on material thickness and magnetic field strength.
  • A participant mentions a substance starting with an "I," implying a specific material related to magnetic fields.
  • There is a reference to the Meissner effect, which is associated with superconductors and their unique properties regarding magnetic fields.
  • Another participant points out that superconductors are relevant to the discussion, although they clarify that they do not block magnetic fields in the traditional sense.
  • A participant shares a link to an external resource that discusses magnetic fields, indicating it has been helpful for their understanding.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion does not reach a consensus on a specific substance that can block magnetic fields, and multiple viewpoints regarding materials and effects remain present.

Contextual Notes

Participants express varying levels of knowledge and assumptions about the effectiveness of different materials and the conditions under which they may or may not block magnetic fields.

Look up something called "mu metals".

Caution: there are no practical material (of arbitrary thickness) that can shield magnetic field of arbitrary strength. So your question is rather vague.

Zz.

I've heard of one, I think it started with an I.

golansha, are you talking about the meissner effect ?

Check the superconductors.
(Not blocking but an interesting effect!)

Are you talking about superconductors, Gokul?

I've found such an interesting question on this website,
http://www.Newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/phy00/phy00508.htm

It is also very helpful for my little knowledge about the magnetic field. So thanks for the question
